- Operator
Only individuals with documented chainsaw training or demonstratable experience are permitted to operate a chainsaw. - Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Mandatory PPE:
Safety helmet with face shield
Eye protection
Hearing protection
Cut-resistant gloves
Steel-toed boots
Long-sleeved shirt and pants made from durable material - Pre-Use Inspection:
Visual check: Inspect the chainsaw for any damage, loose parts, or worn components.
Chain tension: Ensure the chain is properly tensioned.
Chain brake function: Verify the chain brake engages and disengages correctly.
Fuel level and oil level: Check fuel and bar oil levels.
- Safe Operating Procedures:
Work area clearance: Keep the work area clear of bystanders and obstructions.
Proper stance and grip: Maintain a firm grip on both handles with the correct hand position.
Cutting techniques:
Use the correct cutting technique for different situations (undercut, overcut, etc.).
Never cut above shoulder height.
Avoid kickback by keeping the bar tip away from objects.
Use the chain brake when not actively cutting.
Only have the minimum number of people required on site when operating chainsaws. E.g. the chainsaw operator plus one or two assistants. Those assisting should stand at a safe distance from the operator whist the engine is running.
- Refueling Procedures:
Engine off and cool: Always turn off the chainsaw and let it cool down before refueling.
Designated refueling area: Refuel in a designated area away from ignition sources.
Proper fuel mixture: Use the correct fuel-oil mixture as per manufacturer instructions.
Avoid spills: Carefully pour fuel, avoiding spills on clothing or the machine. - Transportation and Storage:
Chain brake engaged: Always engage the chain brake when transporting the chainsaw.
Guide bar cover: Use a guide bar cover when not in use.
Secure storage: Store the chainsaw in a safe, dry location out of reach of unauthorized users.
- Emergency Procedures:
First aid: Know how to administer first aid in case of injuries.
Incident reporting: Report any accidents or near misses immediately.
Important Considerations:
Regular maintenance: Perform routine maintenance checks as per manufacturer recommendations.
Weather conditions: Be aware of weather conditions and avoid operating a chainsaw in adverse conditions.
Specific worksite requirements: Adapt procedures based on the specific worksite and task at hand.
